Description
Acacia honey, locally termed ‘Babul’, is harvested in the months of July-August at an altitude of 5200 feet in the western Himalayan ranges of Kashmir. The region is a major hub of horticulture and hosts a diverse ecology consisting of scenic meadows, rivers, and forests dense with Acacia trees. When in bloom, acacia flowers make for delicious nectar for the bees, the subsequent honey has a viscous, buttery texture with a dark to pale yellow colour. With notes of citrus, the flavours are rich and royal, and are bound to make an incredible first impression.
Health Benefits
The body easily absorbs Acacia honey, and since it is richer in fruit sugars than other kinds of honey, it has a low glycemic index and is a good sweetener for those with mild diabetes. The honey also boasts strong antiseptic effects and is used to treat coughs and purify the liver.
Additionally, acacia twigs are frequently chewed as natural toothbrushes, and the gum of this tree (known as gum arabic) has been used for over 5,000 years in the manufacture of medicines and dyes.
